I’m 100% certain that that title is a lie, but I couldn’t think of anything else.
Last autumn, I decided that my new hobby would be wood working. I’m not even sure that that’s the proper term for it, I want to make stuff with wood! Starting with pallet wood until I get better. However, I decided this right before cold weather hit and you were not about to find me out in the garage in the cold.
Spring forward to my birthday in which my dad bought me a Sawsall and a Skilsaw, and instead of pallet wood we bought a 10 foot piece of birch to fiddle with.
My grandfather LOVED building furniture and was good at it. I have several of his pieces to this day. He taught my dad a lot of the trade but it’s not my dad’s passion. My dad however, is super excited to pass on their knowledge to me and I’m happy to absorb it. Hopefully, it becomes my new hobby because people keep giving me power tools left and right.
Here’s my first project with my dad. It’s a couch arm cover. It functions both as a place to set drinks and other things, and protection for the couch from Ozzy standing on one arm to stare out of the living room window at people walking by. It’s nothing fancy but I did learn some cool tricks to hide screws.

What do you think of my first attempt at building something?
Brilliant. Youβve done well.
Thank you. π
Excellent! π
Thank you!
Looking good, I mean who needs diamonds when you have power tools, right? π
Thanks! You can buy SO many tools for the price of a diamond! π
I’m jealous, I always wanted to learn woodworking. But I’d only build one thing: bookcases! I love that arm table, great ideaπ
Oh bookcases are definitely on the list of things I’m going to do! I’m starting with smaller things for practice but I’ve got a least two bookcases for myself and more for presents for the book lovers I know. π
An arm cover, eh? What a great idea. Good on you.
Thanks. π They’ve proved very useful so far!
I’m so geeked on your behalf that you’re officially getting started on your awesome new hobby. β€ You're off to a great start and I can't wait to see what other creations you come up with! π
Thanks! I need to get back out in the garage but right now I’ve been focusing on getting the front garden looking good. Maybe this weekend, if I’m lucky. π
I remember wood working in high school. I made this rabbit lamp that I used for years. Wish I still had it! When the apocalypse comes, I’m looking you up to make furniture.
Haha, sounds like a plan. π My first wood project in wood shop I made a half moon shaped clock and ordered a wolf image for the center. It turned out decent for my age lol.
It turned out great. I just got a chance to work on a welding project for the first time. I felt like a total badass, honestly! My most recent post is about the experience. Check it out!
I can totally see why welding would make you feel like a bad ass!
It was so much fun! A little scary, too! But still fun!
