Second Week of October

This week ended in death. My husband’s grandmother passed away yesterday after several years battling cancer and nine months in hospice. No need for condolences, there was much pain in the last several months and she has finally been released from something that could hardly be called living towards the end. The black cat gif is in honor of her and her love of black cats.

Reading –Β If you missed it, I finally finished Dracula and I actually enjoyed a classic for once. I’ve now started my book club selection for the month which is completely un-Halloween related. I hope to knock it out shortly and maybe even brave another spooky classic.

Tim Horton’s Pumpkin Spice Iced Capp has strong pumpkin flavor. I think I prefer a little less intense pumpkin flavor in my coffee but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

Movies –Β Two movies this week. I think it important to mention here that I barely watch one movie a month so this is a movie action packed couple of weeks for me. This year has apparently flip-flopped my usual style, reading LOTS of paranormal/horror books. I guess I’ve traded it for movies this season.

4 stars – Most fucked up movie I’ve watched in awhile.
2.5 stars – Highly romanticized version of the book.

Note –Β I know it unwise to watch a movie immediately after reading the book it is based upon but I did it anyway. The most frustrating thing was that there were moments when the dialogue stuck closely with the book and then other parts where the journal entries were completely butchered to make this a weird love tale. Mina and Lucy were both made to be much more vapid than either were and none of the male characters were as enjoyable as they were in the book. It may be the one movie I don’t like Anthony Hopkins in as I strongly disliked his Van Helsing. It did however make me miss when movies had to do something besides CGI for their special effects.

Well that was my successful second week of October. How is everyone else fairing in their holiday fun??

  1. Hurray for Salem!!! I loved the first season of Sabrina back in the day. One of those shows I liked watching at my friends house πŸ™‚

I hear you about 2 movies being a full house. More power to you for the rest of the month!

  2. Aw, love the Salem gif in honor of Mr. Cupcake & Machetes’ grandma. ❀ I'm sure she would have approved heavily. πŸ™‚
I am so glad you had a much better time with this classic, and enjoyed Dracula.
I like the T.H. pumpkin spice ice caps, too. They're pretty good, but I would cut somebody for one of Bigby's "Chumpkin" drinks right about now. lol

    1. Oooo girl, I need some chumpkin in my life too!

I used to watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch on the regular. I loved that show and when Salem popped up in black cat gifs, I was like, “That one!” πŸ˜‰

      1. Seriously. All Hail the Chumpkin! lol (Speaking of Chai-Pumpkin, Tropical Smoothie Cafe now has a pumpkin pie smoothie, a chai smoothie, aaaand a pumpkin chai smoothie!) I tried the pumpkin chai one the other day and it was pretty good (though I still like Bigby’s Chumpkin better!) πŸ™‚
I loved the old Sabrina show, too. And Salem, of course! πŸ™‚ Have you been watching the new show The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix? It’s pretty good imo! It’s a lot darker (like the more recent comics by the same name.) I’ve got 2 episodes left to watch that I’m hoping to finish tonight.

      2. I have not been watching the new Sabrina show. I’ve seen the trailer though and it doesn’t look half bad. I never did get Chumpkin lol. I’m sure they’ll have it a little longer but I’m sure I’ll forget again. πŸ˜›

      3. I know you started watching it since you’ve left this comment, so did you ever finish watching Sabrina? I can’t wait for the x-mas special for it in a couple weeks. πŸ™‚
That’s a bummer that you never got your Chumpkin. There are peppermint stick mochas everywhere now though, so not all is lost. πŸ˜›

      4. Yay! So glad you liked it. Oh, that’s a bummer on the timing. Maybe you’ll luck out and be able to squeeze it in during/after packing. πŸ™‚

  3. I share the love of black cats!! My cat was a black tom and he was perfect. Absolutely perfect. I’m thinking about him often, although he’s been gone for many years now. I never wanted another cat after.

Pumpkin Spice Iced Cap? I might try that at work tomorrow! I’ve been playing with iced drinks today but haven’t been able to use my pumpkin spice syrup too often yet.

    1. I want our next cat to be a black cat. Or a big orange tabby. I don’t know why but I’ve always wanted one or the other color cat. My cat is only 11 though and perfectly happy being an only cat so it will be quite some time before that happens.

I love iced capps. It’s easy to over due the sugar in them though. (I’m more sensitive to sugar since I cut way back on it several months ago.)

  4. Never heard of Mandy? Nicholas Cage hasn’t done anything good since Conair and Face Off in my opinion. I’m a big on breaking rules so my condolences to you and your man. My Nan passed away when I was 10, 29 years ago and I still miss her.

    1. Haha well thank you. I mostly said that because she wasn’t my grandma and he never looks at the blog. I liked her but her and I were never really that close.
I will never say that I am a fan of Nicolas Cage but man does he let his crazy side go in that movie. Super gorey and dark.

  5. Ooh I want to watch that Nic Cage movie, looks like it’s ridiculously over the top indeed! And, I really don’t like that Ford Coppola Dracula movie, Oldman gives a decent performance but everything about the movie is surprisingly terrible, in fact the rather awful ‘Dracula Untold’ is better… and that’s really, really saying something!! πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚

    1. I would definitely agree that Gary Oldman was the best part of that movie. Most of the times that Dracula transformed into beasts was pretty sweet as well, except once or twice. Mandy is over the top but in a weirdly good dark way.

  6. I’m so goddamn behind with my subs. It’s freaking Halloween and this is from the second week of October lol I’m sitting here in my pajamas eating candy. I can’t think of anything better to be doing. My brother wanted me to come over and do shot, but I’m already sick and I need to be semi conscious for work tomorrow :p

    1. Haha. Life gets busy! We sat and handed out candy to kids. It was my first time doing that actually. I’m always out and about on Halloween. It was a lot of fun though because we were giving out giant handfuls of candy and the kids were crapping their costumes. πŸ˜› My husband wants to be known for giving out the best/most candy every year.
