While interesting and creative, I would be bold enough to say that this is not my favorite work of Sanderson’s. In fact, it would be at the bottom of the list of what I’ve read so far by him. It it still definitely worth a read and being so short, it won’t take up much of your time.
As usual, describing a magic system created by Sanderson is difficult.
Shai is a Forger. She can take an old object and make it appear new because the object remembers what it once was. Regardless of being inanimate, it has a sense of self. She can make almost exact replicas of art and ancient artifacts.
Of course, in the land that she lives, this is considered an abomination. When she is caught trying to replace priceless artifacts with her forgeries in the emperor’s palace, she is arrested. Her only way out is to forge a new soul for the emperor. An attempted assassination has left him brain dead. She has 100 days to create a replica soul that is so good, no one will question whether or not it is the emperor or she dies.
